West Nile Virus Surveillance - Naval Hospital Bremerton
Tuesday, June 15, 2010
The West Nile Virus is a seasonal epidemic that has the potential to flare up in North America during summer and into fall. The disease is spread to humans by the bites of mosquitoes which become infected when they feed on infected birds.
Naval Hospital Bremerton Preventative Medicine currently has mosquito traps placed throughout the area at locations on Bangor, Keyport, Bremerton, Indian Island, Jackson Park and Manchester Fuel Depot. These traps are collected weekly and taken to Fort Lewis Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine (CHPPM) to be tested for West Nile Virus.
Pictures of the traps are included in the PDF linked below. If you see these traps, please do not disturb them. It is imperative that they are kept in good working order to maintain monitoring of potential outbreaks.
You can help prevent the spread of mosquitoes by removing any standing water from around your home. It doesn't take much water for mosquitoes to breed and grow. Don't give them the chance!
Additional information on the West Nile Virus can be found on the CDC Website.
