Window Safety
Wednesday, April 21, 2010
Warm weather brings with it the urge to open windows and take advantage of the fresh air. Unfortunately this time of year also brings with it a danger that many people don’t realize until it is too late. Without fail, each season we read of a child falling from a window after leaning against a screen or leaning out a window to play or talk to a friend. Please take a quick check of your child’s room and make sure it is a safe place for him or her to play or nap. The following list may help you determine if you have done all you can:
• Never put beds or other furniture under a window. • Teach children about the hazards of playing near an open window and make sure they understand that a screen will not stop them from falling. • Talk to children about never standing on toys or other things to look out a window. • Routinely check your screens to make sure that they are secure and if you are concerned please call maintenance. • Teach your children that screens do not prevent falls.
If your windows are not already equipped with an additional locking device to prevent the window from opening all the way, we have some available at the Neighborhood Maintenance Office. If you would like to pick up some latches or have us drop some off, please contact the maintenance office. (numbers below)
Hopefully discussion and awareness will prevent a fall from happening to you.
